Show Me Yards and Neighborhoods Eco-Tips
Fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides from lawn care products contribute to nonpoint source water pollution in urban areas. A program called "Show Me Yards and Neighborhoods" has been addressing responsible use of these products to reduce runoff of these chemicals into streams and rivers in Springfield, Missouri. This message will be expanded to a larger audience through radio public service announcements.
Project Description
The Watershed Committee of the Ozarks, with funding from this minigrant, will partially sponsor a radio campaign to extend public awareness about nonpoint source water pollution from irresponsible use of lawn care products. The ongoing "Show Me Yards and Neighborhoods" program is increasing public awareness of the negative impacts certain lawn care practices have on surface and groundwater quality, and demonstrates alternative practices to protect water quality in the watershed. Radio reaches a large listening audience and repeated messages will educate the people in the area about they can help reduce nonpoint source pollution in their watersheds beginning in their own yards and neighborhoods.
Objectives
The objectives of this project are, 1) to reach a large audience through a radio marketing campaign of four different messages promoting environmentally friendly practices on lawns, streets and drainage areas in Ozark communities, 2) to promote the Springfield-Greene County Choose Environmental Excellence program's "Show Me Yards and Neighborhoods", and 3) to motivate citizens to take action in responsible use of lawn care products to reduce nonpoint source water pollution.
Products
The products will include four sixty-second radio public service announcements aired on five different stations, provided as a CD. Additional announcements will be provided as match.
