JEFFERSON CITY, MO., JULY 8, 2008 -- The Missouri State Museum will offer a three-part series on the daily life of pioneer women at the Missouri State Museum in Jefferson City. The first part
of "Cookin', Cleanin' and Child Rearin'" will be Saturday, July 19. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, this program will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
All three programs will describe the work and skills necessary for a pioneer woman to survive the Missouri frontier. This first program will feature the history of frontier cooking by looking at the methods of growing, preserving, preparing and storing foods. Today, many people would find it difficult to prepare a meal without the use of the local grocery store, a microwave and electricity in general. Learn how early Missourians fed their families before modern conveniences and participate in several hands-on activities, including making homemade butter.
The other two programs are Aug. 16 and Sept. 13 and will focus on cleaning and raising children respectively.
The Missouri State Museum is located inside the Missouri State Capitol at 201 W. Capitol Ave. in Jefferson City.
